A recent survey revealed what Technion observers have known for quite some time: The Technion has a decisive global influence in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. In a survey conducted jointly by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with Russia’s Skolkovo Innovation Center, the Technion ranked #6 among the 120 universities identified worldwide for creating and supporting a successful innovation ecosystem, and rose to #1 among those universities operating in challenging environments.

The Technion is educating Israel's gas and oil engineers

Israel has recently discovered enough natural gas to meet its domestic energy needs for decades with a surplus for export. And guess who is educating Israel’s first-ever gas and oil engineers? The Technion!

The new “Mediterranean Natural Gas and Petroleum Engineering Graduate Program” (MNG & PE) will turn out its first class of gas and oil drilling experts in June, just in time to start work on recovering natural gas (and potentially petroleum) from one of two fields discovered deep in the Mediterranean.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher accepting a Technion Honorary Doctorate from then Technion President Dr. Max W. Reis

The late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who earned a Master’s degree in chemistry from Oxford, was honored with a Technion Honorary Doctorate in 1989 “in recognition of her life-long involvement in and passion for science and technology; her exceptional statesmanship in British and world affairs; and in gratitude for her friendship to the State of Israel.” The ceremony was hosted by the British Technion Society at The Palace of Whitehall. The ATS arranged a special Mission to London to attend the event.

Upon accepting the award, along with a custom-designed diamond brooch shaped in the familiar Technion logo, Ms. Thatcher said: “Technion’s reputation extends far, far beyond the borders of Israel. Technion’s work in every field — medicine, science, architecture — is synonymous with the creation of the modern State of Israel.”
