ReWalk receives FDA approval, clearing the way for U.S. sales

There is good news for those suffering from spinal cord injuries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave its stamp of approval to ReWalk -- the exoskeleton that enables paraplegics to walk. While the device has sparked other companies to make similar products, ReWalk, invented by Technion graduate Dr. Amit Goffer, is the first motorized exoskeleton to receive FDA approval.

"Space Elevators" reach for the sky in Technion creativity competition

An elevator for ferrying supplies and passengers to and from outer space may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but aerospace experts say the idea could become a reality in the not-so-distant future. Such is the inspiration behind this year's "Dr. Bob's Technobrain Competition," at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. The finals of the annual student creativity contest will take place at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, June 18th on the Zielony Plaza Lawn (at the heart of the Technion campus).

Cell's Cleaning Mechanism Rebounds after Temporary Stress Episodes

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have discovered that the proteasome - the "biological machine" that rids the body of damaged proteins - "takes a break" when cells are under harmful oxidative stress. Damaged proteins must be disposed of quickly, or they will accumulate and cause long-term damage. The findings are published this week in Cell Reports.

"Virtual periscope" sees above-surface/airborne objects from underwater

"Up periscope!" may become a submarine commander's outdated order, thanks to a team of Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researchers who have developed a new technology for viewing objects above the water's surface without a periscope poking its head above the waves.

Technion's Harvey Prize Awarded to Professors Paul B. Corkum and Jon M. Kleinberg

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's prestigious Harvey Prize was awarded on Tuesday April 8, to Professors Paul B. Corkum and Jon M. Kleinberg.

Distinguished Professor Dan Shechtman Elected into American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Distinguished Professor and Nobel laureate Dan Shechtman, of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). Founded in 1780, the AAAS is a prestigious honor society that recognizes achievement in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. The newly elected class of AAAS Fellows will be inducted during a ceremony held on October 11, 2014 in Cambridge, Mass.

Breakthrough Technology Can Repair Severe Tissue Damage

A breakthrough by Israeli researchers could speed recovery and limit scarring and disfigurement for patients who have suffered large soft tissue trauma as often occurs with serious injury or cancer surgery. By biomedically engineering a muscle flap that includes a patient's own blood vessels, the team has created tissue that could be transferred to other parts of the body along with the patient's blood supply. Current techniques for reconstructing such trauma - including grafts and synthetic material - often fail because of lost blood supply.

Jeffrey Richard to Lead American Technion Society

The American Technion Society (ATS) announced today that Jeffrey Richard, of Riverdale, N.Y., will become the organization's new Executive Vice President in May, following a nationwide search. Melvyn H. Bloom, who has led the organization for the past three decades, will become Executive Vice President Emeritus.

Free Online Software Helps Speed Up Genetic Discoveries

Microarray analysis - a complex technology commonly used in many applications such as discovering genes, disease diagnosis, drug development and toxicological research - has just become easier and more user-friendly. A new advanced software program called Eureka-DMA provides a cost-free, graphical interface that allows bioinformaticians and bench-biologists alike to initiate analyses, and to investigate the data produced by microarrays. The program was developed by Ph.D. student Sagi Abelson of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel.

Jacobs Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute Launches the Runway Program, a New Model for Postdoctoral Entrepreneurs

The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute at Cornell Tech announced today that six postdocs are joining the campus for the first Runway Program, an innovative new model for technology entrepreneurs at the PhD level to advance their research and launch new ventures. Prof. Uzi de Haan, a global leader in tech entrepreneurship and the founder of the Technion's Bronica Entrepreneurship Center in Israel, will lead the one-year program. Cornell and Technion professors will serve as academic mentors for the postdocs, who will also work with a team of legal, industry and venture capital advisors from outside the campus. If a postdoc has a project ready to be launched as a company, their Jacobs Institute-funded Runway Award serves as an investment in the development of the technology much like an angel investor's cash investment might.
